Welcome to the Althea Gibson Community Education and Tennis Center

The Althea Gibson Community Education and Tennis Center (AGCETC) is a mulitfaceted facility, serving the community of Philadelphia since 2003. The AGCETC strives to enhance the lives of youth, adults, and seniors by offering activities ranging from tennis to Zumba to after school homework help.
Located at 10th and Girard Avenue, the year round facility boasts two indoor tennis courts, three outdoor lighted tennis courts, a secured parking lot, garden, and 3,800 square feet of space dedicated to educational programs.

The Center's primary services include the following:

  • Quick Start Tennis: An introduction to tennis for youth ages 5 - 10
  • Junior Deveiopment/Junior Advanced Tennis: Intense tennis lessons to prepare young players for tournament play
  • Adult Tennis: Open play and clinics for adults
  • Enrichment Programs: Chess, tennis, computers, homework help, and academic enrichment
  • Summer Camp: Camp for youth ages 5 - 14


The center is named after the legendary tennis player Althea Gibson. She was the first African American woman to compete on the world tennis tour and in 1956 was the first to win a Grand Slam Title. Miss Gibson, a person with remarkable spirit, determination, and skill, serves as our inspiration and as an example of how one can over come unbelievable odds to achieve local, national, and international acclaim and success.
